Help enabling wireless in Ubuntu for a friend

Postby hronmeer » Wed Sep 23, 2009 7:37 am

I have a friend who has just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on his laptop, but doesn't know how to make the wireless work. I'm a Fedora user, and my wireless worked automatically, so I'm not familiar with how to make this happen. Can anyone help?

Try to go to System -> Administration -> Hardware drivers to see if there are any third party firmware or drivers to install for his system. I have a broadcomm chipset in my laptop and that is always needed to get wireless working. Just make sure he is on wired first as it has to download the firmware.

If maczimus suggestion doesn't work, then post his hardware info. It would help us to help him if we knew what his wireless card is... :D

While off-topic, good to see you back on the board, Stack! How's the move and job going, so far? You were asked about at the last meeting...

Going well. I am staying quite busy. The only downside so far is that the cable company that provides internet to my apt complex has been "busy". We are scheduled to get internet this week so for the last few weeks I have leeching internet access from friends and coffee shops. Not exactly the best way to keep up with people and events online. :-D

Hopefully I will be back online this week and won't be so far off on my postings. :-)

Also, I have gotten involved in the local Linux User Group and have a few presentations coming up for them. They have an interesting format where they have 3-4 20-30 minute presentations from different members. If/when they get around to posting the info for the presentations I will post them back here.

Well I gotta get going...Take care everyone!

I'm still alive and kickin'! I've been doing some contract work. Making an awesome hourly wage, but not many hours. If I was working this gig 40 hours a week, I might buy the company. :D Let me know if you can make it this month. I'm planning on being there.

I don't think we have enough time or disk-space on this server to really get into an answer to this question.
