Virtual gets into everything.....

Postby TexWebslinger » Mon Jun 25, 2007 12:18 pm

We have had wonderful presentations on virtual environemnets under Linux. Several people have played/shown Damn Small Linux(DSL), under M$.

Well, I have stumbled onto an article reviewing OS's that run in a browser. AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE?

Some of the concept is to have applications that you might use anywhere. Uh, ok :) Don't we call that a remote server that we may connect to and do things with? Or maybe called an APPLICATION server??

To put it as an Operating System, that runs inside of a browser application seems rather strong and a misnomer. Since these "Operating Systems" are on remote servers and loaded into your browser, I maintain that they are Application Servers, running a desktop type software under your browser.

To quote;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

An operating system (OS) is a set of computer programs that manage the hardware and software resources of a computer. An operating system processes raw system and user input and responds by allocating and managing tasks and internal system resources as a service to users and programs of the system. At the foundation of all system software, an operating system performs basic tasks such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking and managing file systems. Most operating systems come with an application that provides an interface to the OS managed resources. These applications have had command line interpreters as a basic user interface, but more recently have been implemented as a graphical user interface (GUI) for ease of operation. Operating Systems themselves have no user interfaces; the user of an OS is an application, not a person.

IS this not just another way for non computer people to tell the world of computer issues? Like the great, hacker/cracker term wars...

Is this the price we pay when things become "mainstream"?
Thanks

Please submit your favorite, web page, mail digest, or other linux "notes/tips", for a Linux Link page.
Its not fancy, but it will not drop the information, until the link becomes invalid.
